Without getting into politics, it’s safe to say that in this day and age, immigrants get a bad reputation. While many view immigrants in a negative light, the truth remains that they are here because they want the same thing that everyone else wants: happiness and success. America is supposed to be the place where we welcome those who work hard to realize their dreams. This is exactly what most immigrants want when they come to the United States.
Doe Deere’s story is a testament to that.
Doe Deere, founder and CEO of Lime Crime, a vegan-friendly, cruelty-free makeup line, came to America in 1998. She left her home country of Russia with her mother and her younger sister, in hopes of finding a better life.
Deere and her family knew, without a shadow of a doubt, that working was going to be inevitable. They knew that in order to realize the American dream, you have to work at it. Upon arriving, they started to look for work immediately. Unfortunately, because it took so long for her mother’s work documents to arrive, she ended up having to settle for odd jobs to make ends meet. Even still, she never complained.
Shortly after arriving in the United States, Doe Deere and her family ended up in a homeless shelter. They were given a single room with one bed and no kitchen. For food, they ate at local churches or received food from food pantries. There, they witnessed things that they wouldn’t wish on their own enemies. Even still, they didn’t complain.
Later, they secured an apartment in East Harlem. The apartment elevators smelled of urine. The area was riddled with crime, thanks to the gang-run streets. Even still, they didn’t complain.
Deere and her family are grateful for their experience as it helped them grow in ways they never would have been able to otherwise. These experiences also brought them close with other people that were willing to help.
The leader of a non-profit, Sanctuary for Families, helped Doe Deere and her family get on their feet once more. She helped Doe Deere get into the Fashion Institute of Technology and helped her sister get into Columbia University. This was the beginning of the rest of their lives.
Only ten years after coming to America, Deere launched Lime Crime. Lime Crime, a vegan-friendly, cruelty-free makeup company is a testament to an immigrant realizing the American dream.
